The pandemic has given us many legitimate reasons to be on our various devices more than we once did, but with that also comes the need for personal accountability for how we spend our time online.

For some, what had once begun as an innocent way to pass the time at the beginning of lockdown has gradually become a stronghold from which they now need to be set free.

So exactly what is a stronghold, and what has the bible got to say about it?

In simple terms, a stronghold is anything that seems to have taken hold of our natural ability to say “no,” and they could be legitimate desires too.

Now, the bible encourages us to cast down strongholds, in other words, take authority over them, but we can only do so effectively when we walk in obedience. We can only avenge all disobedience when our obedience is complete. 2 Cor 10:5-6.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. And having a readiness to revenge all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Cor 10:5-6(KJV)

Simply put, disobedience will keep us from fully exercising our God-given authority over the powers of darkness because the enemy only flees when we’re totally submissive to God.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (NIV)

Peradventure, you’ve got some very negative habits that you’re trying to overcome. The first step to being delivered will be to set realistic boundaries, and you’ll need to be very deliberate about this to make it work.

In addition to that, you want to avoid anything and anyone that lures you in the direction of your weakness.

Now, not every negative habit is a stronghold. Sometimes, all we need is some extra support and perhaps some form of accountability to get through a very dark season.  Not everyone who gambles is addicted to gambling, although over time, it could become a stronghold if care isn’t taken,

But some habits are also inherited, which is why we may have a family of compulsive gamblers.

So, take a good look at your family tree, Are there any other compulsive gamblers, for example? if that’s what you’re dealing with. And if that’s the case, then please note that it’s going to take more than willpower to say “no”. You didn’t go looking for it, therefore you’ll need more than sheer determination to combat it.

And that’s why it’s always good to address matters both from the natural and spiritual points of view. Trust me; you can never go wrong when you get God involved in your struggles, when you consult your maker about what you’re going through. He made you, and He sure knows how to fix you.
